"Why Would I Take A Childbirth Class Online? I'm A Hands-On Learner"- The Omaha Baby Nest

Updated: Aug 9, 2020

Hey you. Yes...you. If you clicked on this post, there's a good chance you're considering taking a Childbirth Education class but have had to adjust your plans due to COVID-19. If so, let me first tell you how incredibly sorry I am that your experience of planning to bring your new baby into your nest has been so drastically affected. I can promise you that your sweet bundle will bring a sense of peace and joy amidst the uncertainty surrounding us when they are finally in your arms. If that doesn't apply to you, keep reading because there's also a good chance someone in your life is expecting and this could help them.

So here's the deal. I won't pretend that online classes are ideal for many situations in life, if given the option for an in-person class.

But I can tell you that online education is proven to make people successful at their desired goals and outcomes.

For the time being and the near future, hospitals, birth centers, and in-person facilities have canceled in-person classes until further notice. So what does that mean for you?

It's time to adapt and adjust.

Welcome to your first lesson in parenthood. I am convinced that those who become parents through the COVID-19 pandemic will be some of the most resilient, grateful, and laid back parents. It's an advantage if you choose to see silver linings.

Here are some compelling reasons to take an online childbirth class (or newborn class or breastfeeding class, etc).

1. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR PANTS

Do I need to go on? What a time to be alive. You are now able to receive an evidence-based, interactive, and FUN course with your partner wearing no pants at all. Is that not every pregnant woman's dream? Just keep the laptop screen aimed at the waist up learn all about the physiology of birth in whichever fuzzy pajamas feel best for you.

2. IT IS LIVE + INTERACTIVE- NOT A BORING WEBINAR

They can be SO fun! It is not prerecorded, boring, or dry. Instead, students will be mailed a folder of activities and materials we will work on together as a class. In your folder will be an amazing tool that will help you complete your birth plan stress-free. During each live class, students will have ample opportunities to ask questions and be challenged in their existing ideas of different philosophies of birth.

3. THE CURRICULUM IS THE SAME

The curriculum is the EXACT same one used for in-person Childbirth Education Classes. Not only is it the same, but we have discounted it heavily as a gesture of understanding to our students during this financially difficult time for so many families. We will still have props, we will still watch videos together and practice comfort measures. You will still have visuals and be encouraged to practice hands-on activities with your partner. Our curriculum is evidence-based supported by the American College of Gynecology (ACOG), the World Health Organization, and the American Academy Of Pediatrics (AAP). Students will laugh together, learn together, and envision their baby's birth while being snuggled up on the couch. That is cool.

4. YOU ARE SAFE FROM GERMS

This probably goes without saying but you are safer at home. There are still so many unknowns regarding COVID-19 but we know pregnant people have weaker immune systems in general. Your doctor or midwife appointments and your delivery day will be filled with human interaction. Save the extra exposure and take your education into your own hands...at home.

Why not stay home and learn how to navigate your birth with confidence and empowerment, during an experience that is naturally more stressful under current COVID challenges?

5. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LOCAL TO THE CLASS

This is probably one of my favorite parts about this opportunity. While some of us have all of our friends, family, and support in one state (sometimes even one city), many of us do not. How cool would it be to take a class with your best friend across the country? Now, you get that rare opportunity. Take it! What an amazing way to connect and bond with friends during this beautiful process!

I just so happen to know of an amazing class coming up that checks all of these boxes. YOU CAN SIGN UP HERE! The deadline is APR 15 so that we can mail out your materials. If you have missed this deadline, follow The Omaha Baby Nest on Instagram and Facebook for future class dates. I would also love to chat with you. As a team of Doulas, Breastfeeding Counselors, friends, women, and birth educators, we are pretty good listeners. If you are struggling during this time to navigate and reconstruct your plans to bring you, new baby, home, we are here. We have many services that can greatly enhance this journey for you and your family. We can't wait to meet you!
